A tankless water heater is a major appliance that heats water as it is needed. It is often referred to as an "on demand" water heater.  Some other names used are  continuous flow, instantaneous, inline flash or instant on water heater.  These heaters are gaining popularity.  Some of this is because they last 20 years and can meet the water demand for an entire house.  The supply of water is at a rate of 3.9 to over 9 gallons per minute.

Heating water accounts for more than 30% of the average homeowner's energy bill.  Tankless water heaters are 22% more energy efficient on the average than gas fired storage tank models due to a high-powered burner that quickly heats water as it travels through a heat exchanger.

The initial cost of installing a tankless water heater is higher but the consumer will see cost savings long term.

Some of the advantages of tankless water heaters are listed below:
1.  No tank.  Water is not being contained in a storage tank requiring continuous heating of water using more energy.
2.  Unlimited hot water.  Hot water on demand means never taking a cold shower.
3. Less physical space.  The units can be placed upon an exterior wall or mounted on a wall inside the house or attic.
4.  Reduced risk of water damage.  No possibility of a ruptured tank flooding the premises.  However, a water leak can still occur due to faulty installation, bad fitting, etc.
5. Temperature compensation.  A valve on the units tends to eliminate the issue where the temperature and pressure decrease when used.
